It makes me happy that Hester is finally becoming someone that people no longer fear and look down on. :) People begin to think of the A as standing for Able rather than Adulterer. I think it is wonderful that she has changed into someone who is there when help is needed. Even when the letter A was flashed in the sky when the meteor was sighted, people think that it means that Governer Winthrop has risen to heaven after his death. Hester and Pearl encounter Dimmesdale on the scaffold and go hold his hand, until Chillingsworth is spotted and coaxes Dimmesdale down. Hester begins to wonder if keeping her husbands identity is only hurting Dimmesdale. I think that Hester should help Dimmesdale and give away Chillingsworth's identity. Dimmesdale does not deserve what is happening to him. :(
The fist blog post I read was "Please Apply So We Can Reject You!" by The College Solution. In this blog, the author argued that students are spending too much time and money applying to colleges that are not going to accept them. Most elite schools, (Stanford, Harvard, Yale) only accept people in the top 10% of their graduating class and do not accept all people with perfect SAT scores, yet they fail to advertise this to students applying. The schools are giving false hope to students just to gain money and publicity. The author suggests that students should be more aware of the acceptance rates of these elite schools and spend their time and money applying to schools that actually want them to attend there, and stop playing the "application lottery".
The second blog I read was "How I Dealt With Tough Teachers" by Emily Liu (More Than A Test Score). In this blog, the author expressed her view points on strict, or tough teachers. She mentioned that although it may not be fun to have to study and pay attention at all times, it will be benefiting you in the long run when you are in college. In college, you won't have the constant attention and help available that you will in high school, so she suggests you appreciate it while you can. She also included some tips that will make tough high school teachers seem not as miserable to be around, such as paying close attention in class not just to the material being covered, but also to the patterns or ways the teacher is teaching or "keep and open mind", which means to try to think on the bright side of things while taking that class. After comparing these two completely different blog posts, I was surprised to discover some similarities in the perspective of the authors. The second blog was mainly about trying to get through high school and enjoy the teachers and classes, although difficult. Although the first blog did not say many positive things, it did mention that students should spend less time stressing about applications and have a more enjoyable, worry-free high school. Both of these ideas are present in these articles. Many differences are also present as well, however. The first author talks about colleges giving false hope to students, and disses on many "elite schools", creating an overall negative and disgusted attitude. The second author though, portrays a more positive attitude overall, talking about different ways to make a hard class more enjoyable. Also, the first blog is mainly talking about life after high school or college, and the second blog mainly talks about classes in high school, although both mention how performance in high school effects how you do in college. In my opinion, both of these articles convey many different points of view and are worth reading. WORKS CITED: "Feedly: Organize, Read and Share What Matters to You." Feedly. N.p., n.d. At first I did not know what to think of Hester. She seemed like a normal woman who just happened to make a bad decision. Although not innocent, I did not hate her for her actions. But, after observing her from afar these past weeks and months, I have come to the conclusion that Hester is an arrogant, selfish, unruly woman. She struts around wearing the scarlet letter like it is her prize. Anyone with any dignity would be ashamed to wear that in public. Not only does Hester do this, but she also has stayed close to the town where everyone knows who she is, and not for good reasons. She is obviously not normal and I do not like her influences on the community. She is raising her daughter, whom she has named Pearl. I feel bad for Pearl because of the woman she is forced to be around and grow up with. She never will really have the normal life the other children will; she will forever be an outcast. Although Pearl is not normal either, I believe that she is good for her mother to remind her of her sin. It will be interesting to see what all good and bad Pearl brings to her mother throughout the years. |
